Wheels are simple things made of a circular frame held on to an axle by varying numbers of spokes. For example a wider wheel will need more clearance for turning if on the front, and may protrude beyond the wheel arches at the rear.
Narrower tires are never a good idea as this reduces the tread surface on the road which in turn reduces grip. However adding wider wheels and tires can involve some more complicated details like offset and backspacing to ensure the tire runs true. Wider tires increase the rubber on the road which increases grip, but could reduce performance in a smaller vehicle.
Offset and backspacing should be measured and calculated by someone who understands the mechanics of vehicles. These are adjusted when wider rims are fitted to make the wheel run evenly on the suspension.Mistakes in these areas could cause the rims to run unbalanced or unevenly thus causing tyre wear and affecting performance.
Alloys or Aluminium wheels may well need more care and attention than traditional steel rims but the vast choice of designs makes them very desirable. While it cannot be denied that the shine and style of an alloy is eye catching there are also painted versions available which can add style and looks without needing as much polishing. The important thing when choosing new wheels is that they are right for the vehicle they are to fit. A wheel that looks good on a hot rod may well look out of place on a truck
