Speedway Motorsports Inc. has been the source of multiple news stores recently: last week Burton Smith, Chairman and CEO of SMI, announced that while the company was still planning on purchasing Kentucky Speedway, the 2009 Sprint Cup Schedule is too close to being finalized to add a race for next season. Burton is now appealing to Bill France to add a race date for the 2010 Sprint Cup Season. The SMI purchase deal does have a clause that would allow SMI to break the contract if a Cup date isn’t acquired. Burton, however, stated that that clause would not be exercised.
Last week, Speedway Motorsports also announced that Smith’s son, Marcus Smith, would be replacing H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, the current President and General Manager of Lowe’s Motor Speedway. Wheeler is stepping down after a much-lauded 32-year career at LMS. The personable former President is considered one of the foremost promoters in the motorsports. Wheeler was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006. The younger Smith was elected into the position by vote of the SMI board of trustees.
