DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced on Thursday their intention to change their race fo
rmat to now utilize “Double-File Restarts” referred to as “Shootout Style”. Beginning this week, the first and second place drivers will no longer lineup in a row; they will instead take positions side-by-side as the green flag flies.
NASCAR had recently used the “double-file” format for their non-points Sprint All-Star Race which garnered unpredictable and more exciting results. The new format produces a more exciting and competitive race which is a positive change for both the fans and the sportsmanship of NASCAR.
Out With The Old: How The New Format Compares:
Unlike the previous format where cars on the lead lap would restart in a single-file line the new format gives the race leader the option to start either in either the inside or outside lane with the second place driver starting beside them. All drivers with race positions other than first and second with odd positions would start on the inside lane and all even positions would start on the outside lane.
A Warm Reception: The Fans And Drivers Alike:
Two-time Cup Series champion Tony Stewart gave the new format his immediate support in saying “I’m excited about it, the good thing is that when they drop the green, you’re going to be racing with the guys you’re racing for position instead of trying to clear lapped cars.”
This sentiment was largely shared among NASCAR fans and administration, “We’ve heard the fans loud and clear: ‘double-file restarts — shootout style’ are coming to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO, Brian France.
The NASCAR Tradition:
Ultimately the new format is a change exclusively to maintain the sportsmanship and competitive nature of the NASCAR sport. The new format will lead to more exciting and unpredictable races for the fans and be more conducive to a competitive racing environment. There really are no major drawbacks to Double-File Restarts. The Shootout Style is the next generation of exciting, competitive, NASCAR racing.
