NASCAR Recap: Infineon Raceway
While Kyle Busch may claim that today’s Infineon Raceway victory broke a slump of sorts, the win brought the driver’s season total up to five: a NASCAR high. It’s been two weeks since the young Joe Gibbs’ driver has seen victory lane – not exactly slump material. It was Busch’s first-ever win on a Sprint Cup Series’ road course. In the past two weeks, however, two notable slumps were actually broken: Dale Earnhardt Jr.
celebrated his first Sprint Cup win in 76 races last weekend at Michigan International Speedway while Carl Edwards brought home the checkered after a 36-race drought in yesterday’s Nationwide Series event at the Milwaukee Mile.
While Edwards hoped to become the first NASCAR driver to win both a Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series event at different tracks in the same weekend, his results fell short of the record today. The popular driver brought home a ninth place finish. David Gilliland posted a career-best second place, followed by Jeff Gordon, Clint Bowyer, and Casey Mears. Kyle Busch will expand his lead in the Sprint Cup Points Standings over the second place Jeff Burton. Jeff Gordon’s finish should push him up three positions into sixth place, while Kevin Harvick will lose as many after his crash-induced 30th place finish, dropping into 13th position.
